COURSE DESCRIPTION

 

Politics and Government in Islamic Republic of Iran

Saturday – Wednesday    27-31 July

The main objective of the 16-hour course is to educate students of international relations and political science on politics and government in the Islamic Republic of Iran. The focus of the course is to portray and analyze the political power structure; leadership, presidency, judiciary power, parliament, the role of Islamic ideology in power structure and decision- making mechanism, and policy making in Iran from two standpoints: theoretical and practical. The aim is to provide the attendees with an in-depth, unbiased and a more realistic understanding of Iran’s political behavior. Practical teaching includes visiting the Islamic Republic Parliament and the Institute for Political and International Studies, an affiliated institute of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs

 

 

Islam and politics in Islamic Republic of Iran

Saturday – Wednesday     3-7 August

The purpose of the 16-hour course is to familiarize students of political science and international relations with the subject of Islam and politics in Iran. Given the fact that in the Middle East, the foundations of government and politics of countries, especially in contemporary Iran, are influenced by Islamic thought, so the focus of the discussions is on the education and study of the roots of political construction in Iran from an internal perspective. Also, the main topic is to investigate the influence of religion on the Islamic Republic ideology and the building of religious authority on the principle of Velayat-e faqih (Governance of the Jurist) derived from the Shia recitation. At the end of the course, participants will achieve a precise, realistic and in-depth understanding of the interactions between religion and politics in the Islamic Republic of Iran. Practical teaching includes a trip to Qom, visiting Qom Seminary and also a meeting with a religious Marja.

 

 

 

INSTRUCTORS

Dr. Keyhan Barzegar


 

Director of the Institute for Middle East Strategic Studies and a faculty member of Science and Research branch of the Islamic Azad University. He was a research fellow at Harvard Kennedy School’s Belfer Center for Science and International Affairs from 2007-2011 and Post- doctorate Research Fellow at the London School of Economics (LSE) from 2002- 2005.He is a well-known figure at international conferences on Iran’s regional policy, the politics of Iran’s nuclear program, Persian Gulf’s energy security issues, and Iran- US relations.

 

 

Dr. Amir Mohammad Haji Yousefi


 

He is currently Vice Dean and Associate Professor of Political Science and International Relations, Faculty of Economics and Political Science, Department of Political Science and IR at Shahid Beheshti University, Tehran - Iran. Dr. Haj Yousefi was Director of Center for Middle East Studies and Globalization, Department of Political Science and IR, Beheshti University. He has Ph.D. in Political Science and International Relations from Carleton University (Canada). He has numerous books and articles on Iran’s foreign policy.

VISA INFORMATIONS

Tourist visa

According to the regulations of the Iranian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, a Tourist visa is issued for foreign nationals who are interested to travel to Iran individually or with a group for the purpose of visiting Iran, or their friends and relatives. Depending on your nationality and the consulate which you refer, it is possible to submit your documents and receive a visa after some days without any reference from Iran.
This visa is issued for a maximum stay of 30 days with option of extensions in Iran. The visa remains valid for a period of 3 months from the date of issue and you may ask for a visa extension from the Police Dep. of Foreign Affairs when you are in any Iranian major city . visa will be without label and stamp

Iran Visa on Arrival

Iran visa on arrival refers to a special class of tourist visa which you can apply for and be granted at the major Iran’s gates of entry like international airports of Tehran (IKA), Mashhad and Kish. Some but not all nationals of all countries can apply and are likely to get that visa without much of hassle. Iran visa on arrival usually has a 30 days’ validity.

Darband

Darband, formerly a village close to Tajrish, Shemiran, is a neighborhood inside Tehran's metropolitan limits. It is the beginning of a popular hiking trail into Mount Tochal, which towers over Tehran. A chairlift is also available for those not interested in hiking.
