Perspective of the Balance of Power in Asia in the 2020s

The International Online Spring School is held with the aim of assessing the perspective of political and economic relations between great powers in the Asian continent and intends to shed light on the future of relations between countries and nations in this ancient continent in the decade ahead. Participants in the School will get to know the standpoint of various intellectuals from different Asian countries on the future of power relations at both regional and continental levels.

 

Audience

Students and researchers of Political Science, International Relations, Regional Studies, and all other individuals who are interested in international studies.

 

The School is held in English.

An international certificate will be given to the participants.

  •  Sujata Ashwarya

Jamia Millia Islamia University, India1

Sujata Ashwarya is an Associate Professor in the Centre for West Asian Studies in Jamia Millia Islamia, New Delhi, India. She received her MPhil and PhD degrees in West Asian Studies from Jawaharlal Nehru University, New Delhi. She is a recipient of several international fellowships, including Asia Studies Visiting Fellowship at the East West Centre (2019), Washington DC; Summer Institute Academic Fellowship (2015) at Brandeis University, Massachusetts, US. She was also affiliated as a researcher at the Faculty of World Studies, University of Tehran, Iran. She has published more than 30 research articles in the field of Middle Eastern studies and has written, edited, and co-edited: India-Iran Relations: Progress, Problems and Prospects (2017); and Civil Society, Democracy and State in West Asia (edited; 2010).

 

 

  •  Seyit Ali Avcu

Ankara Yıldırım Beyazıt University, Turkey2

Seyit Ali Avcu is a political scientist and a faculty member at Ankara Yıldırım Beyazıt University. He received his Ph.D. in International Relations and Comparative Politics from the University of Virginia and he thought in several universities in the USA, Turkey, and Kyrgyzstan. He served as a director of Central Asian Research Center (ORASAM) at Kyrgyzstan-Turkey Manas University where he directed several research projects on Central Asia. He is also a former Turkish Cooperation and Coordination Agency (TIKA) Kyrgyzstan country director. His research focuses on Central Asia, Eurasian Economic Union, Belt and Road Initiative, political parties, ethnic conflict, nationalism, politics and religion, politics of economic reform, globalization, and energy politics.

   

  •  Mohammad Mirwais Balkhi3

Former Minister of Education, Diplomat & University Professor, Afghanistan

Mohammad Mirwais Balkhi Joined the Ministry of Education of Islamic Republic of Afghanistan as the Minister of Education from 2018 to 2020.

He has worked as the Deputy Ambassador of Islamic Republic of Afghanistan in New Delhi and previously as the head of Africa and Middle East Desk in the Center for Strategic Studies (CSS) and as the Chief Editor of the CSS’ Quarterly Journal of Strategic Studies. Prior to joining the CSS, Dr Balkhi was a lecturer at the Law and Political Science Faculty of the American University of Afghanistan (AUAF) & was lecturing at the International Relations Faculty of Afghanistan Institute of Higher Education (UofA).

Mirwais Balkhi holds a Ph.D in International Relations (with specialization in West Asian Studies) from Jawaharlal Nehru University in New Delhi, India. He has published numerous academic articles both in English and Persian; including two books in Persian titled respectively; Saudi Arab’s Foreign Policy towards Afghanistan; 1991-2014 and A Critique on Afghanistan’s Regional Integration. Balkhi has also edited the book Afghanistan After 2014.

 

  •  Cammille H. Habib
    Lebanese University, Lebanon4

Camille H. Habib is Dean of the Faculty of Law, Political and Administrative Sciences at Lebanese University. He has authored many books and articles on Middle East politics, international relations, constitutionalism and democracy. Dr. Camille Habib has been a Professor at the Lebanese University since 7 July 1994, a Professor at Fouad Chehab Command and Staff College, Lebanese Army since 1 January 2000­ and a Professor at Military Officers' College, Lebanese Army since 1 September 2009. Dr. Camille Habib has been the Editor in chief of the Lebanese University Journal of Law and Political Science since 2014. Dr. Camille Habib was a visiting Professor, Rennes1 University (France) in September 2015. He has been the Chairman of the Common Administrative Committee in the Master of Strategic Studies in conjunction with the Center of Strategic Studies-Lebanese Army since February 2016. Dr. Camille has contributed to the Arab Association of Political Science, Federation of Lebanese Writers, and The Center for Foreign Policy Studies, Dalhousie University, (Canada), 1993. Dr. Camille has been supervising the admission of specialized officers of Lebanese Army since 2010.

 

  •  Arshi Saleem Hashmi

National Defence University, Pakistan5

Arshi Saleem Hashmi specializes in religious violent conflicts, counter-violent extremism, and conflict resolution with a special focus on South Asia. She currently heads the Department of Peace and Conflict Studies at National Defence University, Islamabad. Arshi has been an Academic Fellow at the Oxford School of Global and Area Studies at the University of Oxford. She has also been a South Asia Leadership Fellow for Counter-Terrorism Studies at Kennedy School of Government at Harvard University and Rotary International Peace Fellow. She was Kodikara Fellow at RCSS that resulted in a book titled Conflict Transformation from Ethnic Movement to Terrorist Movement. She has worked with the United States Institute of Peace, Pew Forum on Religion and Public Life, and the Middle East Institute in Washington DC.

 

 

  •  Abdusamat Khaydarov

Tashkent State University for Oriental Studies, Uzbekistan6

Abdusamat Khaydarov is faculty member of Tashkent State University of Oriental Studies. He has had a distinguished diplomatic career ever since he completed his studies from Moscow State University of International Relations, Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the former USSR. He also has a degree from Diplomatic Academy, Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the former USSR. He has been Visiting Fulbright Scholar at the University of Georgia, USA (2004-5), Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Uzbekistan (1999-2000), Ambassador extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Republic of Uzbekistan in the Islamic Republic of Iran and Permanent Representative of the Republic of Uzbekistan in Economic Cooperation Organization (ECO) (19996-1999). He has a number of scientific works and publication on International Relations, Afghanistan, Iran, Central and South Asia.

 

 

  •  Seyed Mohammad Kazem Sajjadpour
    Institute for Political and International Studies, Iran7

Seyed Mohammad Kazem Sajjadpour is the head of the Institute for Political and International Studies (IPIS), and a full Professor at the School of International Relations of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. He received his Ph.D. in Political Science from George Washington University in 1990 and completed his postdoctoral fellowship at Harvard University in 1991-92. He was the former Ambassador of the Islamic Republic of Iran to the European Headquarters of the UN from 2003-2004 and from 2013 to 2016 was Advisor to the Minister of Foreign Affairs on Strategic Issues. He has published numerous books and articles in Iran and international scientific journals and is the Editor-in-Chief of the Foreign Relations Journal and the Iranian Review of Foreign Affairs Journal.

 

  •  Ivan Timofeev

Russian International Affair Council, Russia8

Ivan Timofeev has been a Director of Programs at the Russian International Affairs Council (RIAC) since 2011. He is responsible for the intellectual performance of RIAC, managing its programs and projects. His personal background at RIAC includes working with Russian and foreign diplomats, governmental officials, experts, businessmen and NGO-leaders regarding Russia’s foreign policy and public diplomacy. Since 2015 he also heads a “Euro-Atlantic Security” program at Valdai Discussion Club. Dr. Timofeev is an author and co-author of more than 80 publications, issued in Russian and foreign academic press. He is a member of editorial board at the “Comparative Politics” – an academic journal on foreign policy and political science. In 2013 Dr. Timofeev was elected as a Professor of the Academy for Military Science.

 

 

  •  Li Wei

Northwest University, China9

Li Wei is a researcher and lecturer at the Institute of Middle Eastern Studies (IMES) of Northwest University, China. He is the Executive Editor for the Chinese Journal of Middle Eastern Studies (CJMES). Previously, he spent seven years in South Korea for graduate studies, under the supervision of Professor Kim Sunghan who served as the Deputy Minister of the Ministry of Trade and Foreign Affairs in Lee Myungbak’s government. Dr. Li participated in many professional and academic activities in areas of DPRK Nuclear Crisis and East Asia Security in his early career. In May 2014, he joined IMES and expanded his research field to MENA studies. His area of expertise are: East Asia Security, North Korea Nuclear Issues, East Asia and Middle East Relations, China-Israel Relations, MENA Regional Security and Counter Terrorism.

 

  •  Akbota Zholdasbekova

Eurasian National University, Kazakhstan10

Akbota Zholdasbekova has Ph.D. in Global Politics. She is Dean of the International Relations Faculty, L.N. Gumilev Eurasian National University (ENU), Nur-Sultan, Kazakhstan and also the Vice-Rector for International Cooperation and Innovations. She was the coordinator on behalf of the ENU for establishing the Abu-Raihan Biruni Centre for Iran-Kazakhstan Economic Studies (BCIKES) which was officially established in August 2019 and inaugurated by Allameh Tabataba'i University at the ENU in Nur-Sultan, Kazakhstan. She published her articles in national and international journals entitled "Eurasia-Latin America Strategic Engagement and comparative perspectives in politics and economics", "Central Asia in India’s energy quest", "Kazakhstan's Middle Power Response to Terrorism", "New silk road diplomacy: India's challenges and responses" and etc.
